My Project

My 4th graders are growing as readers, thinkers, and discussion leaders. A class set of The Lightning Thief will give every student access to the same exciting novel so we can read together, talk about characters, track the plot, make predictions, and build reading stamina as a class.

This project is especially meaningful because our students will be going to see The Lightning Thief play in October.

Reading the book before the performance will help students understand the characters, setting, conflict, humor, and mythology behind the story. They can compare the novel to the stage version and notice how actors, music, dialogue, and staging bring a book to life.

This book is full of adventure, humor, mythology, friendship, challenges, and mystery. Students will connect Percy Jackson’s journey to lessons on character traits, theme, problem and solution, point of view, vocabulary, figurative language, and text evidence. The Greek mythology connection will also help students build background knowledge and curiosity about stories shared for generations.

Having a class set means students can follow along, reread important sections, annotate with sticky notes, participate in partner discussions, and feel included during whole-class reading. This shared reading experience will help make the October play more meaningful, exciting, and memorable.
