Help me give my students an opportunity to play as an ensemble and it will be their first time playing instruments at school. Playing percussion instruments is one of the most intuitive forms of music-making.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is introducing music to their ancillary curriculum for the first time in over 5 years! The students are excited to have a music class for the first time and are eager to learn more about music and to be able to play different instruments.
Around half of our students come from low-income households and underprivileged neighborhoods.
Since music has not been part of the curriculum in a number of years, there are very few instruments on campus, which will make it extremely challenging to give everybody an equal opportunity to learn and experience music-making. In light of the pandemic, our opportunities to make music are challenged even further. Starting the school year virtually will limit our ability to interact with instruments in person, so we will be forced to emphasize music theory more heavily on the front end. Our goal is to be ready to provide our students with opportunities to play instruments when we go back to school in person so that they can apply what they have been learning and experience the joy of making music together.
My Project
Our school has not had a music class or teacher in over 5 years. This will be the beginning of our music program and we are starting out with virtually zero instruments. I would love to start strong by providing the students with some opportunities to play instruments in their music class. Next to singing, playing percussion is one of the most intuitive ways of being musical. Having access to percussion instruments is very important because it is often one of the only ways that an otherwise shy student (or student with special needs) will choose to participate. Unlike singing, beating on a xylophone feels a lot less intimidating. Actually, it feels and sounds really good! Xylophones are a great starting place because they allow us to explore rhythm, melody, and harmony all in one instrument. That would be a great way to start our year!
