I have several classes of energetic, curious, and adventurous middle school students. They are always looking for something new and big to do and learn. Many of them come from difficult backgrounds with less than normal living experiences. For many, coming to school is a way of escaping their everyday world. They feel safe in my classroom, they trust me, and they know that I deeply care for them.
My students have a new appreciation toward learning music, and they are always looking for the next big opportunity!
Once we learn a skill or concept, we build on it and add the next challenge. A majority of my students are not exposed to a wide variety of music. Many would start the school year saying, “I don’t like music” or “I’m not good at this.” Those same kids leave my room at the end of the year and continue with music by either joining an ensemble for the next school year, taking private lessons, or playing an instrument at home.
My Project
We are quickly building up our essential instrument inventory, and with essential instruments, essential accessories are needed! Now that we use an electric bass, an amplifier, and a PA system in our rig, we need to protect them with the proper power strip (power conditioner) that protects from power surges and eliminates that annoying buzz that you hear in amplifiers sometimes (aka. 60 cycle hum.) Extra bass strings for our full sized and short scale basses are also a much-needed item.
We have nice percussion instruments, and keeping them in good condition is key.
We want these musical tools to last for years to come, for many other future students who will go through our program. We have a set of bongos, and when we go on our trips we will need a good padded storage bag to carry it in. We could actually use a second case for the number of accessory percussion instruments and other miscellaneous items that we use. While we’re talking about percussion, we also need a cowbell!
