People's History of the USA

My students need 30 copies of "A Young People's History" because at this time we have no regular textbook.

My Students

I dare to disturb the universe. My students deserve textbooks and to know someone out there randomly cares for them too. I tell them to believe in humanity, because I do everyday I see them.

We are the most diverse language population in the US.

We have a large first generation population. They are the tired, the hungry, the weak that we promise to protect on the Statue of Liberty. For many of them THIS is the American dream; coming to a new land of promise. For others in my classes this is their hope to be better. They truly are pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. Many are excited about college with no idea how they will pay for it. They talk about where they want to be in 10 years and what great plans they have (other than being a hip hop star, though that is common too). Some are specific like an OB Nurse at a local hospital. They are vocal about their needs and desires now and often ask, "How are you going to help me?"

My Project

This book is a textbook masquerading as a biography of America. It humanizes history. "Young People's-" causes passion in students because it presents both sides and teaches them to think for themselves. It asks students to give opinion and invest themselves in history over learning time lines and facts. With this book we can ask "why?" and through it's chapter's learn America's many sides.

1.

We have no textbooks except a few supplemental books. 2. My students need to know all sides of US history so they feel invested in it, and not separated. 3. The reading level allows different levels of challenge for all readers. 4.They are hungry for an adventure I can give them with the right materials. 5.Let them see and believe that they can change the world; like many historical people with small steps.
