My Students

My students live in a rural community surrounded by two rivers at the edge of the Chesapeake Bay. Generations of their families have been watermen, earning a living from catching shellfish and crabs. Some of these families are still living without electricity, and others have experienced transient periods where they have been homeless. Lack of public transportation is the biggest issue in our county, limiting opportunity for employment.

Despite these challenges, our students are eager to grasp opportunities presented to them.

Our school offers students a variety of educational options. We try our best to equip them with the academic and social-emotional skills to take on these challenges. We know our students have the potential to succeed and we want to do our best to support them.

My Project

I would like to provide my students with pens, pencils and paper to replace and replenish the supplies with which they started this school year. As we approach our winter break, more and more students are missing pens and pencils, and their notebooks are running out of pages.

These basic school supplies are necessary for student achievement.

My students need pens and pencils to write notes, copy down information, and communicate ideas. These are the basic tools for every student. Unfortunately, if their families are struggling to make ends meet, these supplies are low on their list of priorities, and it is up to teachers and schools to provide all students with these materials.
