Pencils to Pens: Bringing Art to Life in 3D!

My Project

My elementary art students are naturally curious, creative, and full of imagination. They come alive the moment they enter the art room, knowing it’s a safe space to explore, take risks, and express themselves through drawing, painting, and sculpture. Every day, they bring big ideas and endless enthusiasm to their work, and I want to give them new tools to help bring those ideas to life.

With the addition of 3D pens, my students will be able to turn their two-dimensional artwork into three-dimensional creations.

These pens will allow them to “draw” in mid-air, helping them develop spatial awareness, fine motor skills, and problem-solving strategies. As they explore how lines become forms, students will learn the basics of sculpture, structure, and design in an engaging, hands-on way. Supporting materials like filament refills, power strips, and silicone mats will help ensure the classroom stays safe and functional. The silicone mats offer a heat-resistant work surface, while stencils will support beginner artists as they build confidence and move toward creating original designs.

In addition to art skills, this project will help us integrate topics from science and history. Students might design animal models or ecosystems to reinforce classroom lessons or create historical landmarks that deepen their understanding of the past. These creative, cross-curricular projects promote collaboration, critical thinking, and imaginative exploration, while building up the next generation of innovative young artists.
