Starting the new school year in a couple of weeks I began to think what I really needed in my classroom. Pencils kept coming to my mind. Yes, pencils because they are a supply we use everyday and something we never have enough of. I am a third grade teacher working in the South Bronx. Something so simple as pencils might not seem like a big deal in other schools but it really becomes an issue in our school. On the first day of school all the children come to school with 2 or 3 sharpened pencils ready to go to work. By Oct. ,Nov., a little less than half have pencils anymore. By the start of spring most children are coming to school without pencils. It gets to be such an expense for teachers because I am constantly buying pencils. Our school usually gives us a small box of pencils with about 40 for the year. Some years we get no pencils at all. I would like to have pencils to give to my students all year. I would order them in an odd color so they would recognize a class pencil and not argue with each other over them. So much class time wouldn't be wasted by looking for pencils, borrowing pencils, or sharpening inferior pencils that break easily. Pencils are a simple request but a vital one for a functioning classroom.
