My Students

Our student body is 85% African American, with the remaining 15% being a combination of Asian, Latino, and Caucasian students. These students are excited about education, and many are driven by family members from all over the city just so they can be a part of our great tradition. Approximately 60% of our students live at or below the poverty level.

We are a Title I school.

My second grade students are exceptionally bright, and they need to be captivated, challenged, and motivated to achieve.

My Project

Teaching in a urban school district is no cake walk! Schools often lack the basic supplies to provide students with a quality education. Donating to my project will help students get the supplies they need to be successful 2nd graders. It will also help them to become hands-on learners; engaging in projects that require critical thinking skills demanded by the Common Core Standards.

My project will make a difference, because as I said before, it will enable students to become independent and critical thinkers.

In my Reading class, students often engage in hands-on activities that enable students to develop foundational reading skills. For example, if students are reading a novel, they might make a diorama to represent the setting in the story. Students also might use card stock to design their own comic strip, in order to display the plot progression in a story.

Furthermore, an integral part of students developing foundational reading skills, is engagement in hands-on activities. Throughout the school year, students work collaboratively to develop and create projects and presentations. Materials, such as glue sticks, chart paper, markers, and card stock, would make these projects possible!
