Help me give my students pens, pencils, erasers and electric sharpeners int he classroom to better perform without worrying if they are prepared for class ever again.
The students who will directly benefit from this project are approximately 120 Film Exploration, Analysis & Appreciation students and approximately 30 Creative & Critical Writing students. Both courses are English Language Arts electives which count toward the state required credits for graduation. They are 150 out of 800 students who have been accepted into the top high school in the entire state.
The high school is a public school within the second largest school district in New Jersey.
100% of the students are college bound and are consistently taking numerous advanced placement courses that count as college credits as well.
My Project
Our students go to school in an urban setting where they all experience very unique challenges and hardships. Teachers often greet students with
"Do you have a pencil?" without even realizing the challenges and hardships their students bear in their journey to school every day.
Our students need pens, pencils and printer ink to complete and turn in daily, weekly and monthly assignments to their teachers throughout the school.
Joshua T. Dickerson writes, "I woke myself up because we ain't got an alarm clock; Dug in the dirty clothes basket cause ain't nobody washed my uniform; Brushed my hair and teeth in the dark cause the lights ain't on; Even got my baby sister ready cause my mama wasn't home; Got us both to school on time to eat us a good breakfast; Then when I got to class the teacher fussed cause I ain't got a pencil."
Along with pens and pencils, we currently have two inkjet printers in our classroom (also used as a study hall from 8 to 8:30 AM Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and Lunch Periods all week long with the teacher is present )which use the same type of ink. If we provide ink for these printers, students will be able to print their assignments to turn into teachers throughout the building.
