Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This grant will provide materials to support our middle school’s Peers Uniting Peers (PUP) program, a grassroots effort to build connections between students in special education self-contained classes and other students throughout the school in order to promote kindness and empathy. We began this student-driven program in 2017 through our art exploratory class with one PUP student leader and ten student participants. In the 2025-2026 school year, it has grown to approximately one hundred students, which has led to our need for funding.

STUDENTS: PUPs are awesome!

Students in the PUP Program have big hearts and care for others. To eliminate labels, all students are called PUPs. Our experienced student mentors are PUP leaders. New volunteers are PUP trainees. The students they support from special education self-contained classes are PUP participants. PUP leaders and trainees have chosen to take a year-long elective class to support and mentor PUP participants daily in art, cooking and crafting, and music exploratory classes.

GOALS: 1) PUP participants are integrated into the campus culture. 2) PUP leaders and trainees build connections with PUP participants. 3) The PUP Program expands the hearts and minds of our campus. 4) We exemplify our school motto, to believe, achieve, show respect, and be kind.

MATERIALS: The supplies for this grant will support PUP leaders and trainees for 1) the engaging art lessons that they create and teach to PUP participants, and 2) for their daily creative play sessions with PUP participants, where they bond by playing with sensory and imaginative materials.

BENEFITS: PUP Program students develop social skills, build new connections, gain confidence, and enhance learning. PUP leaders and trainees grow in their social-emotional development, feeling empathy and kindness for their PUP participant peers. The PUP participants expand beyond their small classrooms and make new friends across the school.
