My students are an amazing group of eager, bright and struggling eight and nine year olds that come from a variety of mixed backgrounds. My classroom demographic is made up of forty percent special education students and sixty percent general education students, although you would not be able to tell who is whom. When we are working in the classroom, I encourage my students to move from group to group. If some students are stronger in math than in reading, I will have them work with some of the upper grade level students.
We have children from Turkey, Sri Lanka, Russia, Pakistan, China and several other countries.
Even though we don’t all speak the same language, we are a strong team that works together for everyone’s benefit. It's amazing how wonderful students can be to each other when they see someone is struggling with a task, especially when it comes to a language barrier.
Our NYC school district has made the decision to allow students to both learn in person, in school, and work remotely from home. With that in mind, I am trying to find tools that are effective for engaging students both in person and online using remote/distance learning. When teaching online, the students end up with a very flat and bland method of learning. As an educator of both general and special education students, I know this method is not capable of reaching all of my students. I need to find a fun and exciting way to engage all of my students (especially my special needs students with disabilities). That is why Pear Deck would be perfect for my class.
Pear Deck is a wonderful application that can be added to our Google Deck Slides and it will allow students to interact with us during classroom instruction.
Pear Deck will help show all of my students that they can participate with the class whether they are in sitting in the building or in their apartment. Using Pear Deck, I can give my students opportunities to express their ideas, create illustrations, share their thinking and so much more. Pear Deck helps to open up a world of possibilities to enhance my students' learning experience. With this tool, my students know that regardless of where they are geographically, we are all still together as one class.
