My classroom is an autism-focused classroom that serves students who are moderately to severely impacted by their autism. I teach grades kindergarten through second, but have experience with a wide range of ages. Many, if not the majority, of my students have very limited language skills, and really struggle with both expressive and receptive language, leading to many communication failures.
When a child is unable to communicate their needs and wants, they will engage in other behaviors to get their needs met.
This behavior is usually behavior that is maladaptive or unwanted by the person receiving the communication signals.
It is my job to teach my students appropriate ways to communicate, appropriate ways to regulate their emotions, and also learn basic academic skills. Imagine how tough it can be for a young child trying to navigate the world when your brain processes the world very differently than a typical person.
My Project
PEAK is a research-based program created in response to the growing need for a contemporary, comprehensive, and easy to use ABA assessment and treatment program for children and adults with autism and related conditions. Since my classroom is an all autism focused classroom, the more knowledge I have about behavior analysis, the more my students succeed.
This a new and upcoming program, that is showing promising signs for my population, and can help improve my student's lives.
Attending this conference, will provide me an extraordinary learning opportunity to grow as a teacher and Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The learning never (and should never) stops when you are teacher!!
