As a special education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with many challenges at school, home, and in the community. My students have varying needs and learning styles and require many different supports to be successful. My students typically read from a 1st-4th grade level, and their disabilities range from autism and downs syndrome, to specific learning disabilities and other health impairments.
Though my students are considered Special Education students, they are some of the most hardworking and determined individuals that I know.
I am not allotted a budget to give these students the supplies that they need.
Recently, schools in America have been suffering terrible losses due to school intruders. Many of my students have anxiety and PTSD due to past traumas. My students have expressed to me that even with practice and drills, they don't feel it would be enough in a real life situation.
My Project
Unfortunately in this day and age, schools are dealing with more and more dangerous situations. Particularly situations involving intruders. Recently, our school has begun a new training program to help us be prepared in case the unimaginable were to happen. One of these methods is to create a barrier against the door to help support it from being opened. These bars would provide a quick and safe way to do that.
Our students can't learn if they feel unsafe.
This is unfortunately something that we need to be prepared for. My students need something concrete that will help them act in these dangerous situations. If students are able to have a plan in place, this helps reduce the anxiety and panic that can overwhelm us in these situations. These bars will help the special education wing of the school be prepared, and help the students feel safe.
