My Students

The students at our school are growing up in a time with heightened societal levels of anxiety and depression. Our school recognizes and honors the whole child with a firm understanding that high academic expectations are more attainable when students' foundational needs for safety, belongingness, and acceptance are met.

Our school supports a culture of self-awareness, empathy for self and others, and resilience.

We are proud of our students' developing their social-emotional skill set to navigate through the challenges of school and life. The adults who work at our school support this development, in part, by sending the message to students that they believe in the students' capacity to self-manage, solve problems peacefully, and repair and learn from mistakes.

The message of "we believe in you and your capacities" empowers our students to locate their internal strengths and respond to challenges with resilience, supporting their development of self-agency, internal locus of control, and accountability for their own actions and decisions amid adversity.

My Project

Students with high levels of self-awareness and regulations skills are more learning-ready and capable of recognizing and managing their stress, key factors in nurturing the development of college and career readiness such as resilient behaviors and mindsets.

Elementary-aged students who are provided an opportunity to build their self-awareness and management skills are less likely to disrupt the classroom learning environment.

Classrooms with non-punitive opportunities to self-manage provide students with safe spaces to process and reflect. Students would be taught to utilize the "Peace Corner" if they notice themselves experiencing intense emotions that are impacting their ability to remain learning ready.
