My Students

I teach music through a grant program that integrates core subjects into the arts. On any given day, I see grades K-6 walk through my classroom, where we explore the world, ourselves, language, math, and sciences through music.

My school is located in a suburb of Salt Lake City.

It is an older, smaller, Title I school. It is located in a wonderful community that was hit hard by the pandemic. Our students have lost learning, safety, and security to the pandemic in the last year and a half.

I teach all of the 467 students in the school and their beautiful personalities bring smiles to my face. I laugh with them, I cry with them, and I care so much about them. I consider my job to be the best job in the world and my students are absolutely the reason!

My Project

The hardest part about this pandemic for me, as a music teacher, has been not being able to give my students what they actually need. The pandemic has scarred their little lives in ways that I can't even fully comprehend. There is a large discrepancy between what I can give them and what they actually need but I'm only human so I'm doing my best.

I would give them peace, but the best I can do is quiet.

I have ordered sensory headphones for when the noise in the Music Room is too much.

I would give them comfort but the best I can do is calm. I have ordered weighted lap pads for when they miss their moms, when they get anxious, or when they feel like they need to be held.

I would give them a new world, untouched by pain, but the best I can do is books. Books with songs so that we can sing together, read together, and imagine a better world together.

I would give them the best of me but I've been damaged too. I've ordered instructional books so that I can be the teacher my students think that I am. "The best music teacher ever!"

I can't give them everything but with your help, I can give them more. I can give them the gift of a wonderful music class and perhaps that will be enough to begin healing their souls.
