Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all Latino, originally from Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador, except for one who is from Cambodia and is trying to learn Spanish! My school is located in the Fruitvale neighborhood and many of my families fall into the low income category. Many of my students' parents come from areas in Guatemala where only an indigenous language called Mam is spoken. These parents, in particular, hardly ever can read or write. Sometimes they don't even speak Spanish, let alone English!

Because of the low literacy of their parents, my students aren't often read to or helped with homework at home.

Also, some of them come to school with no experience in such basic things as holding a pencil, drawing, knowing the colors, counting to 10, and writing their names. All this makes our job, as teachers, much harder. So, we need all kinds of possible resources out there and our district doesn't have the capacity to provide them, unfortunately.

My Project

Students in California need to get 100 PE minutes per week. It is hard to fulfill this mission without fun equipment. Balls or jump ropes provided by the school budget don't last too long!

My students hardly have any equipment for Physical Education, and they need it to be motivated!

We had a grant that provided us with a PE teacher and playground supervisors, but we will not be getting this next year. So the hundred minutes will be the classroom teacher responsibility.

We do some cardio warming up for the first 5 minutes and then we play some structured game or sport, for which we need what I asked for. Thanks so much in advance!
