"What we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child." - George Bernard Shaw
Digital citizenry and literacy are important skills to teach our students.
Students do not have equal access to technology at home. It is important that schools provide them with a digital education that will give them more equality in the digital world.
Students will improve their digital citizenry and literacy this year by using the mobile and collaborative devices of Chromebooks and iPads. Students will use these devices to research and share their Genius Hour projects.
My Project
My students will be using the Chromebooks and iPads to submit documents online through Google Classroom and Google Drive, research their Genius Hour project, create their Genius Hour presentation, and share their findings with their peers.
Genius Hour allows students to be the captain of their own learning adventure. They are able to choose a topic/question that they wonder about, that builds on their own interests in and out of school. Students use class time to research their question and produce a presentation to share with their classmates to show what they have learned. In the 2015-2016 school year students will be able to complete 4 Genius Hour projects (each session will last 6-7 weeks). Our district recently increased its bandwidth, making connectivity easier and providing students the opportunity to move around with their devices. It is important for the students to have the mobility of Chromebooks and iPads for collaboration and discussion during research and presentation time.
Having consistent access to digital devices will transform my classroom.
Our time in the computer lab is limited and students get distracted in the lab (it is connected to the library). At home students have a variety of technology access and availability. Having these digital devices at school will help create more technology equality. Students will be researching, creating videos and Google slides, blogging, or choosing the many options that technology provides all while improving digital literacy.
