Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Despite 88% of our school's student population being identified by the state as "At-Risk", our Algebra I students have been working extremely hard in preparation to not only meet but master grade level standards on their upcoming STAAR test. More than 70% of students are on track for mastery in Algebra, and are even tutoring their peers to help them surpass their growth goals. That said, our 8th graders are in the process of reviewing for four different STAAR tests in the coming month and are understandably starting to get burnt out and lose focus; I want to keep them motivated and then be able to reward them for their hard work.

The district has rules against providing students with food, and while I've used little trinkets, toys, and stickers as PBIS incentives throughout the year, I'm hoping to end with a bang by providing students who meet their review growth goals and perform at a mastery level with their very own small gift card to pick something out for themselves!

I'm constantly reminding students how working hard in school will translate into a brighter and more comfortable future, and I'm hoping this incentive will be a little example of that.
