Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My classroom students are almost all new English language learners. As PreK students, this is often their first-time experiencing English at all, let alone in a fully immersive experience for most of their waking hours.

I am requesting materials to help ease their transition and learn how to read.

The leapfrog pads are fun and engaging ways to learn letters, letter sounds, and number recognition while giving students the opportunity to practice writing. The leapfrog books would give my students a chance to be read to, practice independently reading, and learn both English and Spanish vocabulary.

As many of my students are not read to at home, let alone in English, the audiobooks help give my students another 10 minutes of reading that they miss out otherwise. The rug will be a great p[lace to gather and read/listen.

The labels would be posted throughout the room to help my students recognize both English and Spanish words. The pictures help make those connections for my students as they are pre-readers.

Storytelling is the first stepping stone to writing and is often taken for granted. Some of my students do not have toys at home, and therefore do not know how to story tell. Practicing storytelling takes skill which they would be able to practice with the puppet theater and community/transportation centers.

All of these items would not be taken for granted as my students are used to going without. By teaching Pre-K in a low-income mainly ESL school almost everyday seems like a gift.
