My Project
In our class, we have been learning about the Underground Railroad, a pivotal part of American history that demonstrates the power of compassion, courage, and community support. We explored how individuals and groups worked together to help enslaved people escape to freedom, overcoming tremendous obstacles along the way. This lesson taught us about the importance of helping others in times of need and how acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
To connect our lesson to real-life action, we are undertaking a project to support people in our community who may not have access to shower facilities or consistent hygiene supplies.
Our class will be assembling care packages with items such as soap, toothpaste, deodorant, wet wipes, and other essential toiletries for those in need. We will also be including snacks and other basic supplies to offer some comfort. Additionally, we will focus on ensuring the care packages are sanitary and well-prepared by cleaning our workstations and using disinfectants to create a clean environment for assembling these important items. The supplies of wipes and Swiffer refills will help students practice cleaning between each work session - making it a two-for-one learning experience!
As a special education autism classroom, this project provides us with an opportunity to practice life skills in a real-world context. We will practice organizing, sorting, and packing the items, working together to complete single and multi-step tasks. This experience helps us build valuable skills while making a positive impact on others. Through our efforts, we are not only providing for those who need it but also learning the importance of cleanliness, teamwork, and the ability to give back to the community.
