This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are wonderful young people full of energy and passion. They enjoy music and we want to offer every musical opportunity to them possible. The parents, grandparents, foster parents or other family members that raise our students work long hours and for very little pay. Our School population is considered economically disadvantaged and our entire school receives free breakfast and free or reduced cost lunch. The majority of our students are bilingual and come from families of Hispanic heritage. Dispute the many challenges our students face, they are brilliant, creative, hard working, and exciting children. Our goal as teachers is to harness their potential for success and give them as many opportunities for positive learning experiences as possible.

My Project

Our Cougars need a new piano for our music room. We have an old, upright piano that is heavy and difficult to move around. Along with some stuck keys and out-of-tune sound, it is not ideal for our students to learn from and enjoy. I’m hoping we can get this new, electric Keyboard for our classroom so that our “Pawsome Cougars” (aka amazing students) can enjoy and even begin learning the basics of piano in their elementary music education. I remember when I was in elementary school, we had an electric keyboard similar to this and my music teacher allowed us to play it sometimes. That was my first experience playing piano and sparked the ambition in me to teach myself how to play piano. I believe I can instill some of that excitement in our students if they had this resource in their music class.
