My Project

Students are growing up in a world of constant digital stimulation. Many spend hours each day surrounded by phones, notifications, and short-form content designed to capture their attention for only seconds at a time. While technology has a place in learning, students also need opportunities to step away from screens, build focus, and engage deeply with ideas that will prepare them for life beyond school.

I am creating a school-sponsored reading and leadership program for students in grades 8–12 centered on powerful nonfiction books that teach real-world life skills.

Through this project, students will have access to books focused on financial literacy, resilience, communication, goal setting, leadership, critical thinking, and personal growth. These books will be used in reading cohorts, small-group discussions, mentoring conversations, and written reflections that help students connect what they read to their own lives and futures.

This project gives students something increasingly rare: an analog learning experience built around physical books. Instead of another screen-based activity, students will read, annotate, reflect, and discuss ideas face-to-face with peers and mentors. They will strengthen reading stamina, practice sustained attention, and learn how to engage thoughtfully with meaningful concepts over time.

The books requested through this project will become a lasting resource for our school community. Students may join the program at different points in grades 8–12, and the books will be used year after year to support new groups of students as they build confidence, discipline, leadership, and a stronger sense of purpose.

In a culture shaped by scrolling and distraction, these books offer a different path, one that helps students slow down, think deeply, and invest in becoming thoughtful, capable, and resilient young adults.
