My students need speakers for interactive reading, leveled reading books to accommodate all students on different levels, and hands-on learning games for stations.
As a former special education teacher, I typically have a paraprofessional to assist in my classroom. One paraprofessional I worked with was very passionate about education and loved working with students as much as I did. A year later, I am an educational diagnostician and she is a first grade teacher.
Most first grade students are very bright and eager to learn the keys to becoming successful readers, but unfortunately some of them are reading below level.
They need extra help to become on level readers. First grade is such a crucial grade in developing the fundamental skills needed to become lifelong readers.
My Project
Our goal is to see all of the students in this first grade class reading on level. In order to become better readers, these students need to develop blending skills, increase their phonological awareness, and become more fluent readers. It is important to incorporate whole group reading, small groups or stations, and a class library to encourage independent reading and engage all students who have varying learning styles. However, we lack some of the tools needed to effectively incorporate such activites in this classroom. A speaker is needed to attach to the promethean board for interactive reading. Hands-on learning games for stations are needed to develop new skills while making learning fun. Most importantly, leveled readers are needed to accommodate all students on different levels and include in a class library that is accessible to all students. Help pass on the torch and ignite the flame to devlop lifelong readers!
