Parliamentary Procedure You Can Taste!

Help me give my students a hands-on learning experience using Parliamentary Procedure to create a trail mix that will be enjoyed by the class.

Ms. Armour D.H. Conley High School
Greenville, NC Grades 9-12

My Project

Parliamentary procedure can be difficult for students to understand when they only read about motions, memorize definitions, or practice from a script. This project will turn parliamentary procedure into a hands-on learning experience by allowing students to see—and taste—how motions influence a final decision.

Students will participate in a mock business meeting with one important goal: create the class's ultimate trail mix using parliamentary procedure.

Instead of simply choosing ingredients, students will have to use proper motions and meeting procedures (such as proper debate) to determine what goes into the final product.

Students might make a main motion to add pretzels, amend the motion to change the item to mini cookies, move to refer an ingredient decision (peanuts) to a committee, postpone consideration of an ingredient (raisins), or use other appropriate parliamentary motions. As each motion is introduced, debated, amended, and voted upon, students will physically see the trail mix change. We are requesting a variety of potential mix-ins, including animal crackers, Goldfish, raisins, Cheerios, Chex cereal, granola, cookies, and candies (Skittles & M&Ms). There are 5 classes this year that will be conducting this lab.

Students will practice communication, leadership, critical thinking, decision-making, teamwork, and parliamentary procedure while creating a product that represents the decisions made during their meeting. By making parliamentary procedure something students can see, do, and experience, this project will help transform confusing terminology into practical skills students can use in FFA meetings, leadership activities, organizations, and future careers.
