Help me give my students a community garden for them to learn about how to grow and nurture food for themselves in an area that doesn't have access to a lot of fresh foods.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Parkland had a usable greenhouse that was left empty and used to store football equipment. With the help of one interested student several teachers and the gardening club were able to restore the greenhouse and begin to teach the students the art of gardening.
Students at this school often live in areas that have few options for fresh foods and depend instead on heavily processed and unhealthy foods.
We are teaching how to grow these things for themselves in small areas, the best practices for growing these things and how to support their communities using their new skills by spreading their knowledge and encouraging others to participate as well.
We have mostly restored the greenhouse now and our students are ready and excited to start our planting journey. In order to do that we will need some raised beds, seeds, soil, etc for them to grow their plants in.
I have seen with many students within this school that they want to learn more and they want to be involved but there is not the opportunity for them to learn and many families do not have access to the space or supplies for one reason or another. We want to offer our students the opportunity to learn some lost techniques and hopefully they will teach their families and the next generations so that we can continue this tradition and pass this knowledge down.
