My Students
The almost 900 students at our school live in a low-income neighborhood with limited access to basic school supplies. We are a Title I school with almost all of the students qualifying for free breakfast and free lunch each day.
Although my students have limited access to resources, they are enthusiastic to come to school each day to learn many new standards.
I look forward to giving my students many of the much-needed supplies this year by asking the generous donors to provide these supplies.
My Project
Each year, I teach my 5th grade students how to create a "make-believe" budget. They have an income source, expenses and they learn how to balance their household budget. I secretly like hearing them argue about how they can't afford car insurance or get irritated when they have to spend money on incidentals they weren't planning on because this is real life!
I would like to have four Monopoly games for our classroom so when the students have free time in class, they can play these games to practice their financial literacy skills.
During the week, if students have free time in class after completing their classwork, they will have access to four Monopoly games to play in class. This game will help them to reinforce buying and selling skills, as well as cash management.
