I work in a middle school in Brooklyn with a population of students that range from reading two to three years below grade level to readers who are on grade level. Even our low-level readers are excited about books, which is why I want to start a parent child book club. Middle schoolers are just starting to reach the age where they stop communicating with their parents as they broach their teen years. A parent child book club could open the doors to communication. While discussion may start out about plot and characters, the basic elements of books, it will surely lead to greater discussion. Young Adult literature offers a wide range of themes from bullying, school violence, fitting-in and more. Parents will have the opportunity to experience the literature their children are reading, but they will also get a glimpse of what their children are going through in school. Through discussion, children may realize that their parents went through similar experiences when they were in school. Book clubs will motivate students and parents to read together, but it will also create a safe environment for parents and children to openly communicate. Book clubs are meant to be small, so I%u2019d like to run two clubs, each with 10 pairs of parents and children (20 total). Please send us the 20 copies each of the following titles, available through amazon.com. I would like participants to keep the books when the book discussion is finished so that they can add the title to their home libraries.
