My College and Life Prep students love to cook together whenever they get the chance. The struggle is in getting ingredients on hand that they can use for these days. Our community is 30 miles away from competitive grocery shopping options and budgets in many of their families are tight. They want to learn more than the basic skills of cooking and branch out into cuisines from around the world. They also are interested in learning techniques and tastes that will help them stay healthy in their college years.
My Project
What do you have on hand in your pantry on a regular day: flour, baking soda, baking powder, dried pasta, rice, eggs, cheese? My College and Life Prep students want to learn how to cook, but it is a challenge to get supplies for our cooking adventures. Our class will use these supplies for a cooking demonstrations and challenges.
These cooking supplies are standard ingredients that are cost effective and shelf-stable for students to know how to use in the future.
They will learn how to make dough, pasta, sauces, soups, and spice combinations that will help them make basic meals and dishes that will be common in their futures. We will also learn about nutrition of these standard ingredients and calculate the cost per serving--an essential idea for budgeting for a family.
