Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a social worker, I run our Panther Pantry, a resource for students in need. I stock up on personal hygiene items, non-perishable food, clothes, shoes and school supplies. As word has spread and supply has increased, I have many students visit daily to get their basic needs met. This helps maximize educational time, as students are able to return to class right away. Students might need a new pair of socks, a clean pair of underwear, a backpack (because they just moved here or theirs broke), food to take home, clothes for an upcoming musical concert, or a pair of pants.

Students can't fully access their education until their basic needs are met.

The quicker I can meet those needs and send them back to class, the more learning will happen. I want students to feel comfortable and at home in my office as they get what they need, so organizing supplies is important. I also want other staff to be able to stop in and quickly help students find what they need.

I am hoping to replenish the pantry supply of underwear. Middle school periods are very unpredictable and I hand out many new pairs of underwear and other period products.

Our school has an amazing musical program. Students have a dress code for concerts and competitions, and I keep on hand white blouses for students who need them.

While we are in the home stretch for the school year, not all of the backpacks are making it to the summer! Zippers are breaking, seams are busting! As a school with many special programs, including the Newcomers program, we have new students from all over the world start throughout the year, and we want to make sure they have backpacks and school supplies when they arrive.
