Pandemic Penmanship Through Writing With Individual Journals

My Students

Eight is GREAT! Second grade students are full of abundant energy and curiosity and this class is no different. My students are enthusiastic to learn all about the world around them and then show off the skills they have acquired. They are also eager to please and practice strategies until they can perfect them. My class is funny, compassionate, and most of all grateful for the opportunity to go to school. They are hungry for knowledge and proud of themselves when they accomplish a task especially if it was a challenge. I love watching my students interact with each other especially when they are voicing words of encouragement when the work is difficult.

My Project

The pandemic of COVID transformed my classroom. Our learning not only happens at the school but anywhere my students sign in online. Students are split into two groups. One group meets on Monday/Tuesday while the other group meets on Thursday/Friday. We all meet together online on Wednesdays due to the school being deep cleaned. When students are not in school they work online in Google Classroom. I had to removed all soft surfaces such as my bucket stools that the students loved. The wobbly stools I have selected will greatly help my students who need more movement during this time as students have more wiggles due to not being in school 5 days a week. I have selected the easel for the mobility so it can be easily moved to behind my computer screen when we are all online or to the larger group when we are in classroom. The colorful containers will hold individualized leveled books that can be cleaned and sanitized after each group uses them.

Writing with the proper tools such as the 3-lined journal is essential for young students to understand the spacial awareness of the letters and words.

The writing journals will help my students become better writers both in school and at home which is critical need during this time of the pandemic. Having all the work in a journal will help students be more organized as they transition from home to school and back home again. My students have a desire to do well but need your support during this time when they are required to be more independent in their learning.
