This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky to teach art to every student in the building which adds up to more than 500 students in a high-poverty public school. This includes first through fifth-grade classes, including bilingual classes and self-contained special needs. We are 85% low income, resulting in all of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch daily. Our school is located in a predominantly Spanish-speaking community with 50% of students being English Language Learners and 80% of students speaking Spanish at home.

My Project

My students are in need of paint and new stools for the art room. Currently my 5th grade students are learning about artist Sonia Delaunay and creating abstract artwork. We are learning about how to use shapes and measurements to create an original artwork on canvas. This is a completely new experience for students, allowing them to now only use their math skills but also art and design.

Right now my students are so excited to create their own unique artwork!

They love designing their own artwork and creating unique compositions. Now we are just in need of paint and stools to complete our project1
