Painting Tools for Up-and-Coming Artists!

My Students

Thomas Merton once said, "Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." This quote has been echoing in my mind this year as our students face the challenges of balancing life during a worldwide pandemic. I have seen them come to class and both lose and find themselves through the process of creating art. I have seen students' challenging and defeating days turn to times of triumph as they create something new, and I have witnessed them uncovering new revelations about themselves through the work that they make.

Though my students' come from incredibly diverse backgrounds, they are all facing similar struggles as we've faced the events of the past two years.

I truly believe art has become a way for them to process their emotions, problem solve, and develop a deeper sense of self. As my student's paint, draw, sculpt, and write about their art I can see them deepening their understanding of themselves and the world around them.

My Project

Art has served as an incredible outlet for students to share their ideas and emotions in a new and imaginative way. It gives them the opportunity to strengthen not only creativity, but observational and problem solving skills as well. I could go on for some time listing the benefits I have seen my students reap from learning about and practicing art, and that is why I want to provide a way for them to access it outside of school.

I want to make sure that if my students want to grow beyond the classroom, they can!

Not every student has the same access to the necessary materials for art, particularly painting. Painting is a very common form of art that I, and most other art teachers, teach in our classrooms. My students have really enjoyed learning to paint, and have been able to create amazing art through this medium!

For my project I want to create "Painting Kits" that students can check out and take home. My students have access to small palettes that come filled with paint, and I would love to provide brushes for them to take as well. Each brush kit will consist of 3-4 different brush types that the student may use outside of the classroom. When students are able to take materials home their creativity can grow and flourish beyond the classroom!
