Painting Through an Artist's Eyes!

My students need a variety of acrylic paints, 32 painting canvases, rulers and scales to complete their Chuck Close art project.

I am a multiple subject sixth grade teacher at and elementary school in California. Due to the current economic crisis and budget cuts in the education system, we are very limited on our teaching materials for the school year.

My students have shown incredible interest in Chuck Close, an American artist who is well known for his photorealism painting technique. Photorealism is the process of replicating a photograph by painting it onto canvas. We recently read Close's biography and my students are very eager to make their own photorealistic paintings of themselves.

Unfortunately, art programs are non-existent in many schools because of the economic crisis. I am working hard to do my part to keep art alive in my classroom. Participating in a Chuck Close art project will give my students the opportunity to experience an art medium that my students haven't had the opportunity to use. This project is the perfect way to wrap up our unit on Chuck Close. This project not only gives students the opportunity to paint on canvases, but it also gives my students the opportunity to apply their mathematical skills. To do so, we need various acrylic paints and paint supplies. My students will use mathematical skills to grid and measure to find the appropriate proportions needed for this project.

Art is an important subject that needs to be integrated within our schools because it is a way for our students to not only express themselves, but to also communicate their creativity.
