My Students

Having a story come to life through a painting is what my 5th graders will experience.

My 5th graders are always excited when they come to art and eager to learn.

The majority of my students will never experience visiting an art museum and seeing original works of art. But, when I tell them stories of artists, their lives and their paintings they are mesmerized. Having an original piece to hang on their walls at home would be amazing.

My Project

Inspired by life of artist Faith Ringold and her story quilts, my students will write a story, then paint their vision all on a hanging canvas. A quilt style fabric frame will surround their artwork. I hope they will learn that every person, in their own way, can be successful, to never stop trying, and that simple experiences can dramatically influence their lives forever. When they are finished, they will have a work of art they can proudly hang in their homes, that tells a story of something that was important to them and is timeless in meaning.

Art classes so often are targets for budget cuts and yet this is where our students express their critical thinking and decision making skills in a creative way.

I want to show that what the students do in their classes, in this case writing, can be carried over into their art class. Subject areas can support each other creating a new way for students to learn. Art is everywhere. This is what I want my students to realize.
