This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach art at a suburban school in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. My students come from very low socio-economic families and a majority reside in government housing. Due to their financial struggles, many of my students don't have crayons or markers of their own to use at home.
In spite of their financial obstacles, these kids have such a desire to explore, learn, and create new things.
They get excited about working with new art materials and expressing themselves in their own unique ways. They inspire me to look beyond my own challenges and make the most out of what I have.
In today's classroom, with its growing diversity, I believe it's vital that students experience the art, culture, and history that are represented in our student body. It's my goal for my students to develop an appreciation for what makes each of us different and valuable.
My Project
It's no secret that kids LOVE to paint. I want to offer my students the opportunity to express themselves with colors and types of paints they probably don't have access to at home.
There are more colors around us than just ROY G BIV.
Fluorescent and metallic paints add a depth to artwork that basic colors lack. Acrylic and tempura paints are a more affordable option when painting clay than purchasing glaze, and I want my students to have colorful ceramics to take home that they'll be proud of. Sealing their ceramics with Mod Podge gloss sealer will add the finishing touch of a glass-like appearance.
