Paint Like Picasso

My Students

Giggles emerge from my art class as kindergartners realize that they can create a new color from two primary colors. The cornerstone of my classroom rests on imagination and creation. I have witnessed huge educational strides in my students when you ignite their brain with the realization that learning is exciting!

With huge hearts and inquisitive minds, my students enter my classroom everyday ready to learn.

However, the vast majority of my 900 students are not afforded the same luxuries at home as other American children. At our Title One school, 80% of our student population is on reduced or free lunch. Many of my students do not get the valuable experience of the arts. The visual arts provide hands-on learning focused on creative thinking!

My Project

Many of my low income students have not experienced the joy and pleasure of painting. We are learning about the great painter, Pablo Picasso. We would like to create Cubist Self Portaits using oil pastels and paints.

We have read books about Picasso, but nothing compares to hands-on learning by painting like Picasso.

The students will first draw their profile with black oil pastels in intermediate grades and black crayon in primary grades. Then we will add Picasso-like facial features with unique eyes, noses, and mouths. The students will then have the amazing opportunity to paint their creations in bright bold colors like Picasso. I can see their faces now lite up with excitement in the joy of painting like Picasso!
