Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is highly diverse with a free and reduced-price lunch rate just under 80%. About half of our students have limited English ability. We also have a high mobility rate of about 40%, which means more than a third of our students move in and out of the school each year. While we have many hurdles to overcome, we use our diversity as a strength and have set the bar high for all our students.
Each year, our staff and students work to increase their successes as evidenced by assessments and personal goals set with each student.
It is our school's goal to prepare all students to have the skills needed to move on to college when they graduate from high school. Here at the elementary level, we are working to build the foundation skills in reading, math, writing, and science. We are also building skills in organization, communication, problem solving and collaboration so that students can be successful in a world of constant change.
My Project
Each week our special Education classes use art to connect with the stories we read. These art supplies will help these students develop a deeper understanding of story elements. By drawing characters and settings, making scenes from clay and using vivid watercolors to create related pictures they learn more about, and better connect to the stories we read.
One of my biggest goals for all students is to develop a love of reading.
By extending lessons about stories with an art connection, I have seen that students not only can think deeply about the stories, but they also get to take it home with them.
