My Project
My students are struggling readers in a small, rural community. Close to 50 percent of the children in our school are from low-income families. Students at our school are taught phonics skills in a systematic, explicit way, using the principles of the Science of Reading. One such principle is that beginning readers learn best when given decodable books (books with words the students can sound out).
Our students who are between 7 and 9 years old need decodable books which have illustrations and storylines that are better suited to their age group. Because these basic books are usually geared toward the interests of very young children, we are trying to build a small library of phonics readers that will keep older struggling readers turning the pages and practicing their growing skills. These books will help build the confidence of the students and help make them more successful readers.
