Ozobots to the Rescue!

My students need Ozobots to continue to learn about coding and computer science. These tiny egg-sized robots are everyone’s favorite activity, but waiting for a turn to test out your coding skills is never fun.

My Students

Our school is located in a rural area in VA surrounded by military bases. Our school is a Title I school, meaning a majority of our students come from a low socioeconomic status. Specifically, 30% of our students qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. We have a high military family presence, which welcomes a lot of turnover in student population. Many families come to our district after they retire from the military as well as to settle down and raise their family in a quiet and small town.

STEM Lab has been added as a new special for students in grades K - 6 to attend each week.

I am very excited to be the first STEM teacher in our building, however, we are still in need of many supplies to make our class run a little more smoothly and provide the most exciting lessons for our students. Additionally, I would like to provide all the students with the skills needed to be successful in the world in which we live. While our district has been able to provide some supplies, we still have a huge wish list of needed supplies.

My Project

Ozobots help students to begin to understand coding in a visual manner using markers and paper. Students of all ages are able to see the code and watch the Ozobots follow the color-coded instructions. Ozobots also allow students to improve fine motor coordination while designing color coded mazes. Older students are able to expand their creativity while creating more complex codes and integrating other subjects into designs.

Teaching my K-6 students to be active participants in the computer science world is one of the most important tasks I have assigned to me.

As a K-6 STEM teacher, my room is busy all day long with students of all ages and abilities. With the help of Ozobots, my students can become programmers by designing mazes for their Ozobots. I am also able to easily adjust lessons to fit the needs and abilities of the students in each class. Additionally, students can experience success and failure when designs don’t work as planned. Students learn skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and persistence while actively creating activities for their Ozobots to follow.
