My students need hands-on activities in science. They love to experiment and explore new things. I would like each student to be able to dissect their own owl pellet to find out what owls eat.
My school is a Title I school located in rural Arizona. All students get free lunch and breakfast. Many of the students come from homes without the structure and guidance needed to succeed in a school setting.
Our goal for the year is to "Be the Difference." These students need to know that you are there for them and care about their well-being.
They have many challenges to face on a daily basis. Many have issues controlling themselves and their emotions.
My Project
For this project, students will use the scientific method to make a hypothesis and investigate what types of food an owl eats. Each student will be given an owl pellet and a pair of rubber gloves. After filling out their hypotheses, students will break apart the owl pellet and investigate what they find inside. Students will them be asked to draw what they find;. They will have to make conclusions about what the owl ate by looking at the remains uncovered in the owl pellet. Finally, student will collect their data and write about their predictions.
The students will improve their learning by following the steps of the scientific method and charting their data.
They will get to be scientists and have a hands-on activity that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Students school lives will be improved because they will be able to use the scientific method in their future for more and morecompex investigations. They will see what it is like to be a scientist and make observations and predictions.
