My students are 7th and 8th graders that have diverse learning styles and abilities. These students have learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and/or speech and language impairments. Some of my students are also English Language Learners. I am currently teaching them as a small group for core subjects - English, Math, and US History/Science. They join their peers in the general education setting for P.E. and electives. All of my students are motivated and have a desire to progress and succeed. They have the zest for learning something new each day and always look for new ways to challenge themselves.
My Project
Themes such as overcoming adversities and building community are important lessons to incorporate in my English curriculum. My students enjoy reading novels that they can better relate to and connect with, and the chosen novels in this project address all of this as well as their diverse learning needs.
When doing a novel study, I would like to present stories that my students can personally learn from while receiving differentiated English instruction for special needs and language development.
The chosen novels are also more accessible stories for my readers and their varied abilities. This would further enhance their English instruction in my double English periods and practice skills such as reading comprehension, drawing inferences, and building literacy.
