This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Outdoor Learning at our Garden Part II is our second project for our school yard garden. I have four empty planter beds in our school yard and we begin planting Summer/Fall vegetables and plants. This project is for Amazon gift cards to online shop as a class for their seeds, soil, fertilizer, etc...on Amazon as an experiential learning process throughout the year. This outdoor learning experience is a wonderful way to kick off the school year when we meet our little scholars and their families for the first time.

Students get to brainstorm which seeds they want and then go online to purchase the seeds for us to plant.

Students get to discuss what tools we need and then they get to go online to purchase their own tools to use with their family. All of this great fun is an year long experiential learning experience.

Students and families brainstorm, discuss, decide, and create an action plan to care for and use their new garden space to "think like a gardener". With our students we ask questions like: "What does a gardener do"? "What does a gardener need to be successful"? "How do gardeners decide what to plant"? "What do gardeners do after something is planted"? "How long does a gardener wait before their crops are ready to harvest"?

This project is about students and TK families having an active role in our school garden and us teachers supporting and providing student learning through an inquiry model of instruction. Outdoor learning is the best type of learning in our classroom. We also want to provide students pictures books about gardening to read in our outdoor reading nook and revisit over and over throughout this process. Thank you DC!
