Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low income/high poverty school district, my students and others here at my school are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom.
We are a Title I school, and 100% of our students receive both free breakfast and free lunch as well as a free snack twice a week.
The students are creative, hands on learners and need a sense of wonder. They like to move and read. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and are of low socioeconomic status. We cannot control the experiences in their home life but we can give them a sense of wonder in school in a creative and positive way. I am eager to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path to academic success and achievement.
My Project
The students at our school will learn STEM in their new outdoor classroom. Our new garden will promote reading outdoors. Students will also have many opportunities to journal write, reflect, and insert nature observations and science details into their interactive science journals. The materials we are seeking will enhance our students' learning in the areas of writing, reading, art, science, math, social studies, weather, gardening.
In order to assist my student with our school garden, we are in need of garden tools, a bird feeder, birdhouses, wind vane, sprout grow window, thermometer, "How does a plant grow" book, kids hand tools, and a rain gauge.
These materials will make a difference in their learning by giving them a sense of wonder in their outdoor learning classroom.
The outdoor garden will improve their school lives by helping them care for the environment and all that it entails such as; life cycle of plants, insects, composting, weather and measurement, nature, and will instill a passion for the outdoors. Gardening is improving the lives of future generations to come. We need to teach them how to care for the Earth.
