Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school has 3 amazing outdoor, asphalt free spaces. We have a courtyard that has small trees, native plants and grasses. In our front playground we have two large bioswales that also have native plants and help to filter run-off water from the playground in a natural way. This helps the city with water overflow problems when we receive heavy rainfalls. My project includes an array of materials that can add depth to the time we spend in the gardens. I am excited to be able to bring to the children's ceramic steppingstones that we can paint and then hang on the wire fence to make a permanent art installation in the courtyard. I have requested canvases, fabric and paint that we can use to create art from our experiences in the gardens, and then the children can gift to their families. Flower bulbs, and plant growing materials have been added to add more color to our gardens and to send plants home with the children. I have also requested a rug and four chairs for an area that is concrete but in a shaded location for the upcoming hot days before summer!
I'm am working with a literacy specialist to expand how I can bring literacy connections to the time my students spend in our gardens and extend the time the children can be outside.
I've included books on rollie pollies, fireflies, and spiders, (other animals have been included in a different project), as the children are fascinated when they find the smallest creatures who live in our gardens. The art materials will be used to create literacy extensions, creating connections from the books we read, to what we see in the garden, to what we create from our experiences and write in our journals.
