There are four Pre-K classes at our school. That is approximately 80 children ages 3-5 years old. We have a very diverse population of kiddos in our program. Many are English Language Learners, as well as many different cultures and backgrounds.
The children love playing outside on the playground.
We have a fenced-in playground area; however, when the weather doesn't allow for the playground, there is not much for the kiddos to do. Outdoor free play allows those students who are English Language Learners to practice English in a comfortable environment, as well as lets all of the children get to know the other teachers and classmates. During outdoor recess, students are supposed to be able to continue to have choices of ways they would like to express their imaginations like they do in the classroom. That is just not the case currently!
Not every child likes to run around while on the playground. My goal is to provide every student with items they find appealing to play with while we are out on the playground. A wider variety of materials means these young kiddos are learning to explore and manipulate their bodies in different ways that they are not able to inside the walls of the classroom. Children this young need to be allowed to release their energy in a healthy, organized way. Outdoor recess allows students to learn informally, and sometimes that kind of learning is the way kids learn best!
