Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Schools in the state of Colorado have been struggling financially since funding was cut from the state in 2009. Our school district has lost millions of dollars in funding since then. I work in a school that has many economic challenges. In the school and in the home, with lots of family struggles, our students are greatly disadvantaged in their education. Over 70% of students are on free or reduced price lunch. Despite many students coming to school for their only hot meals for the day and some with clothing needs, they still have a desire to learn.
My Project
Donations will help bring my classes into the 21st century. As the art teacher, I use the whiteboard every day. The whiteboard is the focal point of my teaching, and it increases motivation in my students. We need a mounted magnetic whiteboard. I would like to be able to use magnetic manipulatives to enhance student learning. The tools of art are critical because art education enhances the students' lives and improves their visual abstract thinking.
I have a whiteboard, but it is made of cheap shower board that is hard to write on and will not erase without a great deal of time and effort.
I also have two outdated chalkboards that I do not use due to the chalk dust that can contribute to or aggravate asthma as well as add to cleaning time. Providing a magnetic whiteboard for our wall will enable my students to engage together in group activities. This cooperation engenders an invaluable sense of teamwork and cooperation among the students.
