My Students
We began the year with the book Wonder as a read aloud. We had deep discussions about acceptance of all people. We would like to end our year together reading Out of My Mind which has a similar theme. My students need to each have their own copy in order to have a richer experience with the text.
My students are a culturally diverse group with students from Somalia, Burma, Vietnam, Mexico, and Tonga.
Everyday, as fifth graders, they have to learn how to adapt to the people around them and all of the personalities that in a classroom full of pre-teens. We have been working hard as a class with me and with our counselor on effective ways to communicate and how to accept others for who they are and the experiences that they have had in their past. They are an amazing group of fifth graders and it is my sincerest hope that they will remember these lessons that we have taught about tolerance.
My Project
We will end our fifth grade year together reading and discussing the book Out of My Mind. It is an amazing story that I believe my students will connect with and learn from. Our fifth grade team wants our students to continue our study of character development and theme that we have worked on all year.
This book will make such a difference to my students' lives.
They need to hear about and read more about kids like them that have overcome hardships and are not judged for what they look like or what they can or cannot do, but are accepted for the kind and intelligent people they are. They need to know that it's ok to be different, and that it's ok to be nice to those who are different too.
