My students are a culturally diverse group with students from Somalia, Burma, Vietnam, Mexico, and Tonga. Everyday, as fifth graders, they have to learn how to adapt to the people around them and all of the personalities that in a classroom full of pre-teens. We have been working hard as a class with me and with our counselor on effective ways to communicate and how to accept others for who they are and the experiences that they have had in their past. They are an amazing group of fifth graders and it is my sincerest hope that they will remember these lessons that we have taught about tolerance.
