For my students, the majority of whom rarely travel outside their inner-city neighborhood, events happening in other regions of the U.S. or the world are quite ambiguous. Although field trips would be ideal, school funding has severely limited our ability to take educational field trips on a guaranteed basis. As a second grade teacher, enhancing my students view of the world is of the utmost importance. Therefore, I want to be able to provide clear-cut, interesting, factual text that is directly connected to real-life experiences.

The periodical Weekly Reader would be a tremendous tool to use in my classroom each week to enhance students' knowledge of current events taking place outside of our inner city community. This school year, the Olympic Games and the Presidential election will be paramount areas for discussion and learning. Each of these areas, and numerous additional themes, will be addressed in great depth in the Weekly Reader. Students could have an up-to-date text source to explore during Social Studies instruction. Furthermore, each student would have the opportunity to keep their copy and take it home to use for independent reading practice. As an additional benefit, students could share their new knowledge with their families.

In order to make this goal a reality, I need funding for 24 copies of the Weekly Reader periodical. Please help provide a clearer picture of the world to my students.

Your help will make it possible for my students to have a "window to the world" and broaden their awareness of people and places existing in other parts of the Earth.
