Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you ever want the opportunity to participate in sports without having to play the sport? By allowing any student, athlete or not, to run the scoreboard we provide an opportunity for any sports fan to be a part of the action.

My elementary students attend a school that has a mandatory uniform dress code policy.

Many of these families are low-income families, and struggle to simply provide their children with one uniform, let alone the proper athletic gear to participate in our after school activities. Even during the winter months, the students do not have the appropriate attire to practice and play outside, yet they continue to do it. These children make the choice to participate in something positive and safe after school instead of running the streets. The students come from many different backgrounds and by providing them with the opportunity to participate in afterschool activities, we get to watch these children grow from classmates to friends to a family unit and that by far is the greatest accomplishment of all.

My Project

We need a scoreboard to keep track of the time and score during football, basketball, and soccer games. The scoreboard will also be used during P.E. classes. Our after school activities consist of two coed flag football teams, two boy basketball teams, one girl basketball team, three coed soccer teams, and one cheer leading squad. Two parents, three teachers, and I volunteer to coach practices and games. Together we provide a safe place and activities for students to be after school hours. Our school is a very old elementary school with a large open field great for all sports. With the addition of a scoreboard my students would be able to learn time management, score keeping, and more of the noncompetitive level of the sport.

Growing up I had the opportunity to visit one of the greatest baseball fields, Wrigley Field.

A vision that I will never forget is the scoreboard. Many of these children do not have access to a television or a sports stadium. This scoreboard will bring an aspect of sports that these particular children may not get to experience.
